Product Description

Allerdale Goat is an award winning, semi-hard goats’ cheese, with a moist, easily crumbled texture and a clean, sweet almondy flavour when young.  This gives way to a crumbly textured cheese with a sweeter nutty finish as it matures.

Each cheese is made with unpasteurised goats milk and is hand made in open vats, pressed and then bound in cloth to mature for up to 5 months.

Allerdale Goat was the first cheese produced by Thornby Moor Dairy in Cumbria and has been made for well over 40 years by Caroline Fairbairn at her dairies close to Wigton.

In 1979, Carolyn Fairbairn began her dairy career in her basement. She used the goats’ milk from her farm to create her first cheese. She perfected her formula, so well, that even after 40 years the Allerdale Goat cheese is still highly sought-after and as delicious as it first was.

Today, she works together with her daughter, Leonie, to transform Cumbria’s lush green grazing, into fantastic cheeses using goats milk from her own herd combined with milk from a mixed herd, at Dolken Dairy, in nearby Wiggonby. Natural kid rennet and sea salt are also used to produce this unique and truly wonderful cheese
