Meredith Dairy is the largest farm of its kind in Australia where Sandy and Julie Cameron milk both goats and sheep and process dairy products every day. Their aim is to add value to all farm produce, not just milk, to produce the best products they can and farm in a responsible and sustainable way.
Both Sandy and Julie grew up on farms and always wanted to be farmers, turning over the soil, growing food and raising animals. Sandy trained as a vet and Julie was working as an intensive care nurse but the couple took the plunge and left their jobs to work as full time farmers in Meredith.
In 1991, traditional farming was in turmoil and the price of wool and farming commodities became uncertain. To survive on the land they needed to be innovative and add value to their farm produce. The couple love food, so decided to milk sheep, then goats, to make cheese and yoghurts.
Meredith Dairy’s marinated goat cheese is inspired by a traditional Iranian style of cheesemaking. Made with the fresh milk of their own goat herds, the Cameron family work entirely by hand, and have won justified acclaim around the world for the incredible quality of their cheese. Especially good with crusty bread, or for adding a smooth citrus tang to soups and salads. Angus Cameron, Sandy and Julie’s son says “Put a generous amount on a piece of bread, but then a good drizzle of oil on there as well. The oil᾿s the second component of the cheese”.
